Two sprays are enough — a third and the tuberose takes over the room, since it lasts into the evening and carries well across it. Works from spring into early autumn, but evenings are where it pays off: dinners, dates, the point at which the vanilla and sandalwood underneath widen out.

Not rated yet — be the firstTuberose here is handled as something creamy rather than heady — orange blossom softens it from the opening and takes the fleshiness out of the flower. The vanilla underneath is not gourmand: it rounds the bouquet off and sets it on a pale, faintly musky wood. What stays is milky and luminous, a long way from the opulent tuberoses of the eighties.
