The Japanese chapter of Comme des Garçons' Incense series, Kyoto takes Buddhist temple incense as its subject rather than the church variety. The incense reads dry and cool, braced by cypress and vetiver, with teak and cedar turning it into the smell of timber and old joinery rather than warm resin. Coffee and everlasting flower sit behind it as a roasted bitterness, while the amber stays light and never softens the whole.

Six hours of wear with mid-range projection: enough for an autumn evening with no top-up, and not so much that it takes over the table. Incense leads by a wide margin, so keep the hand light — two sprays indoors is the ceiling. Cold months only, and neutral enough for anyone to wear.
