Founded in Paris in 1961 by three friends — the painter Desmond Knox-Leet, the set designer Yves Coueslant and Christiane Gautrot, who worked in an architecture practice — the house first sold fabrics. Scented candles, launched in 1963 as a sideline, took over; the first perfume, L'Eau, appeared in 1968. Philosykos, in 1996, made fig a perfumery material in its own right.
