An English house founded in 1856 in Basingstoke, Hampshire, by Thomas Burberry — a former draper's apprentice, then twenty-one. Its reputation was built not on scent but on a cloth: gabardine, invented in 1879 and patented in 1888, weatherproof and breathable, which gave rise to the trench coat and outfitted polar expeditions. Fragrance came much later, and the house licenses its production out, as most fashion labels do.
