The company started out as Abercrombie Co., an outdoor specialty retailer for camping, fishing and hunting gear founded by David Abercrombie. It took the Abercrombie & Fitch name when it was formally incorporated in the state of New York, and opened its Madison Avenue flagship store in 1917. Its headquarters later moved to Columbus, Ohio.
